5th Dan Instructor and Grading examiner to the Welsh Shotokan Karate Organization USA.
USA Representative for the WSKO based in Texas.
General Secretary to the ISOK (International Society of Okinawan Karate)
I began my training in Shotokan Karate with Sensei Haydn James in Cornelly in June 1982 with the KUW, during that time I was afforded the opportunity to train with many great sensei’s of differing styles and technical abilities not to mention, Mike O’Brien, Dave Hazard, Richie Noblett (RIP), Ticky Donovan, Dominic Valero, Chuck Norris, Vince Morris, Hirokazu Kanazawa, Chuck Merriman, and Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace. I participated in many competitions and won team and individual rankings at multiple venues throughout Wales in the 80’s, and I was always ready to attend the next seminar and gleam and learn from the next sensei and was graded to Shodan by Enoeda Sensei in 1986.
Due to travelling for my job and leaving the UK, I arrived in the USA and trained in the Kenpo system of Karate, as I was unable to locate a solid Shotokan Karate club in the area of California where I was living, and I obtained my 1st Degree Black Belt April 1996. During this time I felt like a nomad looking for a club and a style that I could relate to, as many clubs were a mix mash and were not teaching what I knew as real karate, and were teaching a lot of their techniques without any understanding of the Bunkai and no real quality applications.
It was during this time I was introduced to the likes of Sensei’s like Vince Morris and Chuck Merriman who had an infinite understanding of karate and more so the Bunkai and applications associated with this, I believe this is the moment when my karate just started to click. Still unable to find a style and home for my karate that I could relate too, I reached out back to Wales and started to converse with Sensei Jason Ashcroft, and this is when my association with the WSKO began its journey.
